As a product designer at Sony, I created the user interface for their first Home Energy Management System, part of the Pecan Street Project—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at testing smart grid technology in a 100-home beta environment. The system enabled users to monitor and manage their energy consumption in real-time using a web-based interface. Working with a UX researcher who conducted ethnographic studies in users' homes, we identified key motivations such as cost savings, comfort, and eco-consciousness. I designed the information architecture, wireframes, and user flows to track and analyze energy usage by time, device, and room, distilling robust and complex energy usage data into clean, readable interfaces with progressive disclosure to give users clear and actionable messaging to help them save money and reduce their carbon footprint.
